Topical, relevant workshops offering understandable, practical presentations by experts and case study speakers, often followed by a good lunch! These are the hallmarks of Warwickshire Rural Hub events.

There have been more events and visits in the last 12 months than ever before and they fall into three categories: information, regulation and innovation. The latest survey responses from Members have told us that 96% feel the information provided by the Hub is both reliable and useful.

The last characteristic of our programme of events is that delegates are very reluctant to go home! The opportunity to network is a crucial component of our events and delegates certainly take the chance to do so. At evening meetings, this can lead to bleary-eyed Hub staff at 11.00 pm, but they recognise that well connected businesses are successful businesses.

Plough Saturday service of celebration and dedication

Warwickshire Farming Community Network invites you to a service of celebration and dedication for Plough Saturday.  This is an opportunity to take part in a celebration of the farming year for all those involved in agriculture and who live in rural communities and to join Warwickshire FCN volunteers for tea and cake after the service.

The Reverend Canon Barbara Clutton, Agricultural Chaplain for Warwickshire, will be officiating
The Reverend Claire Maxime, Chief Executive of the Arthur Rank Centre, will be giving the address
The Bishop of Coventry, The Right Reverend Dr Christopher Cocksworth, will be blessing the plough

Do you have a redundant farm building, or a small plot of land that you are thinking of using for housing?  Our event will give you information on what you are likely to be able to achieve in your district of Warwickshire.  Class Q permitted development is available for farming buildings and small plots of land on the edge of villages can be given rural exception site status for affordable housing.  Hear all about working with developers, or how to secure funding to manage a building project yourself.  And how would your proposals fit into the succession plan for the farm business?

After the presentations you will be able to visit a building converted under Class Q, speak to your local planning authority representative and chat with companies who could help your along your journey.  There may also be the opportunity visit a local affordable housing development.

Farming, families and the future – a time to think differently?

Farmers face unique problems when carrying out succession and business planning to ensure that their farm is protected for future generations.   Our event will:

  • set the scene on the current economy and make some predictions for the future;
  • give you information on how to prepare a business plan for the short, medium and long term;
  • encourage different generations to start the conversation on succession;
  • explain what your accounts are telling you about the future of the business;
  • provide a range of ideas of how you could add value to your business.

We will be using real-life case studies and there will be plenty of opportunities for questions and networking.

Speakers at the event include:

  • Joel Woolf, a partner at Wright Hassall solicitors and a farmers’ son from Suffolk who advises estates and farmers on strategic business planning,
  • Mark Dickin, a partner at Ellacotts accounts, who specialises in succession planning and helping clients create a plan to pass the business and their interests in land to the next generation, and
  • Phil Bicknell, the Market Intelligence Team Director at the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board.

Dawn Chorus Walk with Ed Drewitt

5.00am – 7.00am followed by bacon baps and a farm tour

Organised in association with the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust Dunsmore Living Landscape Project you are invited to join us on an early morning tour of Village Farm to hear all about the birds present.  Our tour leader will be Ed Drewitt, who is a naturalist, author, BBC broadcaster, feather expert and Peregrine researcher, amongst other things!   Ed specialises in identifying birdsong and will be a fantastic leader for our tour.  You can read all about Ed on his website.

After the event has concluded we will be serving a breakfast of bacon baps and tea/coffee and farm owner Miranda Aston will be available to show you all areas of the farm.

Embracing new ideas and technology – a visit to Squab Hall Farm

Squab Hall Farm is an AHDB Strategic Farm comprising 1000 acres of owned, rented and contract farmed land.   The farm is also part of a larger 1800 acre Arable Joint Venture. Current cropping consists of Winter Wheat, Winter or Spring Barley, Spring Beans, Oilseed Rape and Spring Linseed, all on soils ranging from sandy clay loams through Kuper Marl to heavy clays.  Around 80 acres of the farm is in the Higher Level Environmental Stewardship scheme.

GPS steering and Variable Rate Product Application are used extensively on the farm via high accuracy GPS subscription signals.  A controlled or Managed Traffic system is used for crop establishment.  All operations use auto steer and run on the same wheelings and tramlines every year, which helps reduce compaction on heavy soils.  Seed and fertiliser are applied variably using a combination of soil scanning and satellite imagery throughout the growing season, allowing the targeting placement of inputs to help maximise yields.

Farm Manager Rob Fox will take us on a tour of Squab Hall and tell us how he costed out and evaluated use of precision technology on the farm.   A sandwich lunch will be provided courtesy of Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board.

Begonias and bio-beds – a visit to Bordon Hill Nursery

Bordon Hill Nurseries Ltd. are a high volume producer of wholesale ornamental plants. They specialise in the production of young plug plants from seed and cuttings for the commercial trade and use a wide variety of process technology enabling them to benefit from an unsurpassed level of quality control. The nursery’s entire production process is controlled by sophisticated IT systems allowing them to be very adaptable to changing production methods and to changes in market dynamics.

During our visit we will be visiting the sowing area, viewing the gapping and transplanting processes and hearing about germination and growing on.  Our tour will then visit the nursery’s one million gallon reservoir which collects all of the roof water before it is fed through reed beds to minimise nitrate and other nutrient loss into ground water.  All water that is used in the cleaning process for growing equipment is finally channelled to a BioBed. Here any chemicals are broken down and rendered harmless by carefully maintained bacteria.

At the end of our tour we will be visiting the nursery canteen for refreshments.
