Defra has launched the third part of their EU Exceptional Aid scheme, namely a small dairy farmer scheme. The scheme will provide a one off payment to eligible farmers who choose to apply. The scheme is England only and has two eligibility requirements:
• Annual milk production of less than 1 million litres in the April 2015 – April 2016 milk year.
• Still in milk production.
Currently the scheme is to be funded by £8.5million from the EU Exceptional aid scheme but this could increase dependent on the uptake of the other two schemes (ammonia reduction scheme and risk management training). The RPA will not know the rate per litre until after the closing date of the scheme (midnight on 31 May) as payment is dependent on the number of applicants.
The application process is simple – the form can be found online and farmers will need to submit proof of the volume of milk they produced in the last milk year (an annual milk cheque will suffice).
